In it's current state, BuildCraft represents more of an API platform to developers, and a "framework" of power and item transport for players, than it does a mod with complexity, such as mods like Industrial Craft 2.

Playing with other Tech-based mods plus BuildCraft[]

Assuming that the player has other Tech-based mods installed, a player will usually only need to use BuildCraft for pipes (and by association, the Wrench), the Quarry and Pump. Because of it's ability to use Solar Panels, players generally defer the generation of power to Industrial Craft 2, and use a mod such as PowerConverters to transfer power to BuildCraft machines, due to this process being much less resource-intensive than relying on BuildCraft's own machines. It also eliminates the need to ensure that power generators are fed water, since this is irrelevant for IC2 power generation.

The Advanced Crafting Table can also be used to automate tedious tasks, like creating Copper Cable.

Playing with just BuildCraft[]

The player will need to make extensive use of Waterproof Pipes and Engines in order to generate the power needed for the player's eventual aim, the Quarry, as well as a pipe infrastructure to transport the mined items away to be processed/examined by the player.
